Join us Friday, August 7 for our Block Party & Paint Day!
This mural will belong to the neighborhood, and it will take a neighborhood to make it happen. Whether you have a few hours or want to help shape the project from start to finish, there's a way to plug in.
We're organizing volunteer roles into two types:
Coordinator & Lead roles are for folks who want to be part of the core crew. These involve planning work from May to August leading up to paint day — things like outreach, permits, design support, and logistics. Expect a few hours a month and regular check-ins with the team. These roles are a great fit if you want deeper involvement and enjoy planning and logistics.
Day-of Helper roles are for anyone who wants to just show up to pitch in, and be part of the fun without a long term commitment. You'll sign up for a shift at our paint day block party. No prep work, no meetings — just come ready to help and meet your neighbors. We'll have ways for drop-in volunteers on the day, but if you'd like to own something specific (from chalking outlines in the morning, to DJing or doing final detail painting) then you can get assigned to a specific role and shift.
No special experience necessary for any role. If you're curious but not sure where you fit, reach out and we'll find a good match.
We are still building out our volunteer sign-up system, please fill out our Keep me updated! form in the meantime and we will follow up about specific assignments closer to the date.
Outreach & Recruitment Lead
Help us spread the word. You'll create and distribute flyers door-to-door and to local groups, recruit neighbors for the community sketch session and paint day, and help drive attendance at both events.
Role open for 1-2 people
Community Sketch Session Coordinator
Help with planning and facilitation of our community sketch session at Midland Library. Prepare art materials, facilitate the session itself, and help gather and scan the artwork and ideas created.
Role open for 1-2 people
Design Lead
Work with our artist to shape design options for community voting, translate the chosen design into a paintable plan with measurements and color specs, and create the chalking reference drawings used on paint day morning. On paint day, you'll own the final look and make on-the-fly adjustments as needed.
Role open for 1 person
Communications Coordinator
Set up the online voting system for design options, define the voting window, and share results with the community. You'll also help with post-project outreach — sharing photos, updates, and thank-yous. Good fit if you're organized with digital tools.
Role open for 1-2 people
Permits & Logistics Coordinator
Handle the paperwork side of making this mural happen: submit the artwork for PBOT permitting, coordinate the block party street closure, create and distribute the PBOT neighbor notification flyers (required for everyone within 400 feet), and coordinate barricade rental including pickup, drop-off, and traffic plan details.
Role open for 1 person
Paint & Supplies Coordinator
Work with The City Repair Project to estimate and order paint using their tools and discount form. You'll pick up the paint from the shop (truck or van needed), deliver it for storage. Good fit if you have access to a vehicle and don't mind a bit of heavy lifting.
Role open for 2 people
Party Planner & On-Site Coordinator
Plan the logistics of paint day itself: where to set up different stations and activities and serving as the go-to person for on-site questions. Good fit for someone who thrives on event-day coordination.
Role open for 1 person
Donations Coordinator
Reach out to local bakeries, farmers market vendors, and neighborhood businesses to request food and drink donations for paint day. Good fit if you're an outgoing person who doesn't mind asking and following up to coordinate pickups.
Role open for 1-2 people
Painters
This is the heart of paint day — actually putting color on the street. No art experience needed, and all ages can participate. We will offer sign-ups in 1–2 hour shifts, but everyone is welcome to participate how they want to. Primer goes down first, with detail and color work happening later in the day. No supplies needed, but wear clothes that can get paint on.
Open role, all day
